Furnace Problems Common in Arlington Heights Homes

Arlington Heights has one of the most diverse residential building inventories in the northwest suburbs. Post-war bungalows, mid-century split-levels, and contemporary new construction all coexist within the same school district boundaries. That range of home ages translates into a wide variety of furnace types and failure modes:

  • Cracked heat exchangers in pre-1990 furnaces: Older natural-draft and induced-draft furnaces in Arlington Heights’s established neighborhoods are reaching the age where heat exchanger fatigue becomes a real concern. A cracked heat exchanger can allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the living space. We perform visual and camera inspections and will flag this issue immediately if detected.
  • Ignitor failure in electronic-ignition furnaces: Hot-surface ignitors are the most common failure point in modern gas furnaces. Silicon carbide and silicon nitride ignitors become brittle after thousands of heat cycles and eventually crack. Homeowners notice the furnace clicking on, attempting to light, then locking out after three tries.
  • Inducer motor burnout: The draft inducer motor clears combustion gases before the burners ignite. When it fails, the pressure switch never closes and the ignition sequence halts. A grinding or high-pitched whine from the furnace cabinet typically precedes total failure by a few weeks.
  • Flame sensor fouling: A dirty or oxidized flame sensor tells the control board that no flame is present even when the burners are lit. The board shuts down the gas valve as a safety precaution, usually within a few seconds of ignition. Cleaning or replacing the sensor is a fast and inexpensive repair.
  • Blower motor bearing failure: Arlington Heights homes with furnaces running 12 or more years often develop blower motor issues. Worn bearings produce a persistent humming or rattling sound, and the motor eventually draws excessive amps before stalling entirely.
  • Pressure switch errors: The pressure switch verifies that the inducer motor is producing adequate draft. A cracked hose, a blocked condensate drain in high-efficiency models, or a weakened switch diaphragm can all generate a pressure switch fault code on the control board.
  • Thermostat wiring degradation: Low-voltage thermostat wiring in older Arlington Heights homes can become brittle, develop shorts, or lose continuity at terminal connections, causing intermittent heating failures that are difficult to reproduce.

How We Handle a Furnace Repair Call in Arlington Heights

When you contact Midwest Comfort, we schedule a specific appointment window rather than a vague all-day range.

Step 1

Arrival & Symptoms

Your assigned technician arrives in a fully stocked service vehicle, confirms the symptoms you reported, and performs a comprehensive diagnostic.

Step 2

Full Diagnostic

We cover the thermostat signal chain, ignition sequence, gas valve operation, heat exchanger integrity, blower motor performance, flue draft, and safety controls.

Step 3

Clear Explanation & Quote

Once we isolate the failure, we explain the issue in plain language, show you the affected component when feasible, and present a flat-rate written quote.

Step 4

Your Approval First

You approve the price before we proceed. No work begins without your go-ahead.

Step 5

Repair & Verification

After completing the repair, we cycle the furnace through a full heating run and verify that supply air temperatures, return air temperatures, and flue gas readings are within manufacturer specifications.

24/7 Emergency Furnace Repair in Arlington Heights

A furnace failure during an Illinois winter is a genuine safety hazard that can lead to frozen pipes, dangerous indoor temperatures for children and elderly family members, and potential carbon monoxide exposure if a malfunctioning system is forced back on improperly. Our after-hours line at (847) 338-2777 connects you directly with a Midwest Comfort dispatcher, not a third-party answering service. We respond to Arlington Heights emergencies on nights, weekends, and holidays with the same diagnostic thoroughness as a scheduled appointment.

Why Arlington Heights Families Trust Midwest Comfort for Furnace Repair

The heating contractor you choose is someone you are inviting into your home during a stressful situation. Here is why Arlington Heights homeowners choose us:

Proximity That Translates to Speed

Our Elk Grove Village headquarters is roughly ten minutes from most Arlington Heights addresses, which means shorter dispatch times and faster heat restoration.

Honest, Itemized Quoting

We present the full cost—parts and labor—before we pick up a wrench. The quote is the invoice. No revisions, no surprises.

Technicians Trained on Safety First

Every team member holds EPA certification, is NATE-ready, and follows a carbon monoxide testing protocol on every furnace call. Your family’s safety is not negotiable.

Stocked Trucks That Eliminate Return Trips

We carry ignitors, flame sensors, inducer motors, blower motors, control boards, pressure switches, gas valves, and common capacitors on every vehicle.

No-Commission Technicians

Our team is paid for quality work, not for selling you a new furnace. If a $150 repair gets you through five more winters, that is what we recommend.

Community-Rooted Reputation

Our 4.9-star rating across 300-plus reviews was built one honest call at a time. We protect that reputation with every job.

Frequently Asked Questions — Furnace Service in Arlington Heights, IL

Most same-day requests are fulfilled within a two-to-four-hour window. For after-hours emergencies during extreme cold, we dispatch immediately and typically arrive within one to three hours depending on current call volume.
Minor repairs such as an ignitor or flame sensor replacement typically run $150 to $350. Mid-range repairs like a blower motor or inducer motor fall between $400 and $900. Major component work such as a heat exchanger or control board replacement can range from $800 to $2,500. You receive a flat-rate quote before we start.
The most common causes are a failed ignitor preventing the burners from lighting, a flame sensor fault shutting down the gas valve seconds after ignition, or a limit switch trip from overheating due to a clogged filter or blocked return vent. We check all three during our standard diagnostic.
A furnace that old has exceeded its expected lifespan and is likely running at 60 to 80 percent of modern efficiency. If the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a new furnace, replacement is usually the better investment. We provide both options with transparent pricing so you can decide based on real numbers.
Yes. We test for carbon monoxide as part of every furnace diagnostic and repair. If we detect elevated CO levels or a compromised heat exchanger, we will advise you to shut down the system and discuss next steps immediately.
Short-cycling is usually caused by a dirty filter restricting airflow, a faulty limit switch, a thermostat issue, or an oversized furnace. We identify the root cause during our diagnostic rather than simply replacing parts until the symptom stops.

Sooooo.....we were just returning from an exhausting (but fun) vacation. The weatherman said the temperature would be in triple digits. I turned on the air conditioning. A couple hours later, our home was still hot and I realized the A/C wasn’t working. Panic! Quick! I called Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling and spoke with Brian. He set up an appointment for the same day. The same day! Mark came out and immediately found the problem. He was professional, knowledgeable and explained everything. Viola! He had our system was up and running in a very short time! I can’t say enough good things about Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling. I certainly give them the “mostest” number of stars. I don’t do a lot of reviews and/or “give stars,” but I certainly need to let people know how happy I am with this experience. I certainly will use them in the future for maintenance in our home and hopefully won’t need them a lot for emergencies like this but happy to know they’re there when needed! Thank you, thank you. I truly highly recommend Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling!

When our 60 year old boiler stopped working on the coldest day of the year, which happened to be a Saturday, we called a number of furnace repair places who either didn't answer or couldn't come out for several days. Midwest took the call and was at our house within 2 hours. During that time, they kept us updated on their ETA. The repairman was courteous and professional. He fixed the problem quickly and we had heat a short time later. The price was very fair considering the circumstances. I highly recommend them.

1/6/26 - last month I finally had to bite the bullet & get a new furnace and A/c. They were honest & Fair. I got the smaller unit per Leo’s suggestion. They were fast, efficient and thorough. They were even able to fit a humidifier in a very tight space where previous companies said would never fit. I love having a humidifier in the winter. My Google Nest thermostat was malfunctioning a few weeks later and Leo just came out and got that working. I’m very happy to be in their Comfort Club. This is a small company so you get to know them, and they treat you well. 2024- Today I had a motor replaced by Leo and once again the service was great and I renewed my service plan agreement. 2023- Jeff replaced two parts in the furnace, and informed me that the filters I was using were restricting the airflow too much. He also informed me that the unit I bought 15 years ago from a different company is too big for my house so he adjust the gas burners so I don’t over heat my unit. He was VERY good and carefully explained everything. Thank you Jeff!

Midwest is now my HVAC company of choice. Leo has been here 3 times. Super friendly and explains things very well. I particularly like the fact that you're not one of those companies that are Jack of all trades, like HVAC, electric, plumbing, but masters of none. (Looking at you, 4 Seasons!) I had yearly maintenance. The price was competitive and fair. See you again in the spring for the a/c, Leo!

I’ve used Midwest Comfort for years on my own home. Always professional and honest. Recently reached out to have my mother’s home maintained/serviced. Mark was excellent, on time and professional. Cleaned her furnace and diagnosed any issues as the system is nearing replacement. Mark was honest with her and went through options should she decide to replace the system. Could not be happier with the service. Will definitely be recommending Midwest Comfort to family and friends. One of the few remaining independent HVAC businesses you can trust.
