Banging or Clanking
A loud bang or metallic clank usually points to something loose or broken inside the unit. The most common culprit is a loose or broken connecting rod on the compressor, but it can also be a stray piece of debris bouncing around inside the outdoor unit, or a bent fan blade hitting the housing.
What to do: Turn the system off before the damage spreads. A loose part left unchecked can turn into a full compressor replacement, which is a much bigger repair bill than catching it early.
Squealing or Screeching
That high-pitched squeal is almost always about the blower motor. It could mean the belt is slipping, a bearing is wearing out, or the motor itself needs lubrication. In some cases, it’s a sign of high internal pressure, which is a bigger red flag.
What to do: Squealing sounds tend to get louder and more expensive the longer you wait. This is a good one to schedule a repair for right away rather than letting it run through the weekend.
Clicking
A single click at startup or shutdown is normal, that’s just your thermostat or relay doing its job. But rapid, repeated clicking while the unit is running is a different story. It often means a faulty relay, a failing capacitor, or the system’s control board struggling to keep the compressor running.
What to do: If the clicking is constant, shut the system off and give us a call before it tries and fails to start again.
Buzzing or Humming
A steady buzz can come from a few different places: loose parts vibrating against the cabinet, a failing capacitor, refrigerant lines rattling, or even debris caught in the outdoor fan. Sometimes it’s as simple as a loose panel; sometimes it’s an electrical issue that needs a technician’s eye.
What to do: Don’t ignore a new hum, even if the AC still seems to be cooling fine. Electrical issues in particular can get worse quickly and are safety concerns, not just comfort ones.
Hissing or Whistling
Hissing is one of the noises we take most seriously, because it’s often a sign of a refrigerant leak. Whistling can point to the same issue, or to air escaping through a duct leak or a blocked airflow path. Either way, your system is losing efficiency and possibly losing its ability to cool your home at all.
What to do: Refrigerant handling requires a licensed technician. If you hear hissing, that’s your cue to call for AC repair, not to wait and see.
Rattling
Rattling is often the least urgent of the bunch, but it shouldn’t be ignored. It usually means something has come loose such as a panel, a screw, or a piece of ductwork, or debris like sticks and leaves has gotten into the outdoor unit.
What to do: A quick inspection can usually track down the source before it works its way into something more serious, like a damaged fan blade.
