Expert AC Repair vs. Replacement Guidance from Midwest Comfort Cooling & Heating

Determining whether you need AC repair or if it’s time to replace your system can be challenging. What are some common AC issues, and can you independently diagnose an air conditioner problem? At Midwest Comfort Cooling & Heating, the more informed you are about air conditioning and heating repair, the more likely you will choose us as your service provider! Our technicians are highly skilled and communicative, helping you understand the problem and the best solutions. They respect your home and ensure any AC issue is resolved quickly. We also offer a lifetime warranty on our service, so if the problem recurs, we’ll be there to fix it with no questions asked.

Common AC Problems and Causes

Many things can go wrong with an air conditioner, and numerous underlying causes exist. Most common air conditioning problems fall into three broad categories.

Not Cooling Properly

Wear and tear can affect cooling performance, but several common issues can prevent an air conditioner from maintaining the desired temperature.

  • Dirty Filters: A dirty filter can increase energy consumption, cause frozen evaporator coils, and contribute to unhealthy indoor air. Regular cleaning and replacing your AC filter can prevent these issues.
  • Refrigerant Issues: Your AC unit may have old, ineffective refrigerant, or coolant may have dissipated or leaked out. Proper refrigerant levels are essential for cooling performance.
  • Sensor Problems: Your air conditioner contains numerous sensors that relay information. Over time, they can send false readings, causing the AC to work less reliably and efficiently.
  • Thermostat Issues: If your thermostat doesn’t accurately read the air temperature, your system may “think” it’s running correctly when it’s not.
  • Drainage Problems: An air conditioner creates condensate that must be drained away. AC drains can become clogged with dust, dirt, and rust, leading to moisture problems.
  • Dirty Coils: Dirty condenser coils won’t dissipate heat effectively, causing the air conditioner to work harder and potentially never reach the desired temperature.

Not Turning On

If your AC doesn’t respond when you turn it on, this may be due to:

  • Electric Control Failure: Compressor and fan controls can wear out due to overworking or corroded connections.
  • Thermostat Failure: Various issues can cause your thermostat to fail, preventing a successful connection to your AC.
  • Faulty Motor: If the motor is defective, the AC will not work. Unusual sounds often precede a motor failure.
  • Dirty Condensers: Debris, mold, or algae can obstruct the condenser line, stopping your AC from working until cleared.
  • Lack of Power: Your AC might not get electricity due to the circuits of the HVAC units. Check your circuit breaker.
  • Wiring Problem: Issues with your air conditioner or other appliances can originate with the home wiring. Watch for flickering lights or humming sounds.

Airflow Is Limited

Limited airflow can happen for various reasons, some simpler to fix than others.

  • Ductwork Issues: Airflow problems can be caused by clogged, disconnected, or leaky ductwork. Blocked vents and registers can also cause trouble.
  • Dirty Filters: While your AC isn’t designed to clean air, it uses filters to remove damaging particles. Change these filters frequently.
  • Obstructed Condenser: Leaves and debris around the unit can restrict airflow and cause overheating. Clear the area around the condenser unit.
  • Faulty Blowers: Blower fans, controlled by motors, can limit airflow if the motor is sluggish or the fan is dirty.
  • Oversized ACs: An oversized unit cycles on and off too frequently and does not run long enough to remove humidity.
  • Thermostat Problem: A faulty thermostat can limit airflow by not blowing enough air. Incorrect settings or low batteries can also be culprits.

Benefits of AC Repair

When Midwest Comfort Cooling & Heating technicians arrive, their trucks are stocked with the parts most frequently prone to failure. We carry replacement parts, including blower motors, compressors, wiring, filters, refrigerant tanks and refills, trim kits, and more. Most common AC repairs can be done in one trip. Repairing your AC avoids the expense of replacing it and saves on energy costs since a faulty air conditioner can waste power. Repairs also make your home or office more comfortable. A simple tune-up can result in higher efficiency, cleaner air, and improved reliability. We offer unbeatable service plans to ensure your AC gets the attention it needs.

Is Air Conditioning Repair Enough?

Repairing your air conditioning system has many benefits, but it has limits. Our technicians have extensive experience with various AC systems and can advise when a repair isn’t sufficient. Eventually, you might consider replacing your traditional system with a central unit. Factors to consider when deciding if an AC repair is enough include:

  • Age of the Unit: As your AC unit approaches 20 years old, it may be reaching the end of its lifespan.
  • Energy Efficiency: Units over 15 years old should be considered for replacement based on energy savings alone.
  • Frequency of Repairs: Frequent repairs can be costly and create an uncomfortable home environment.

What people say

1/6/26 - last month I finally had to bite the bullet & get a new furnace and A/c. They were honest & Fair. I got the smaller unit per Leo’s suggestion. They were fast, efficient and thorough. They were even able to fit a humidifier in a very tight space where previous companies said would never fit. I love having a humidifier in the winter. My Google Nest thermostat was malfunctioning a few weeks later and Leo just came out and got that working. I’m very happy to be in their Comfort Club. This is a small company so you get to know them, and they treat you well.

2024- Today I had a motor replaced by Leo and once again the service was great and I renewed my service plan agreement.

2023- Jeff replaced two parts in the furnace, and informed me that the filters I was using were restricting the airflow too much. He also informed me that the unit I bought 15 years ago from a different company is too big for my house so he adjust the gas burners so I don’t over heat my unit. He was VERY good and carefully explained everything. Thank you Jeff!
Great furnace tune-up experience. The technician was punctual, knowledgeable, and very thorough. Everything was explained clearly and all my questions were answered. Highly recommend!
Outstanding service!!
These guys did a really great job. The cost isn't bad either.
Midwest response time was quick, Leo was very kind and professional did a great job checking everything over. Price was reasonable, will be using them again.
Midwest is now my HVAC company of choice. Leo has been here 3 times. Super friendly and explains things very well. I particularly like the fact that you're not one of those companies that are Jack of all trades, like HVAC, electric, plumbing, but masters of none. (Looking at you, 4 Seasons!) I had yearly maintenance. The price was competitive and fair. See you again in the spring for the a/c, Leo!
Replaced a Mitsubishi mini split that was past the point of rescue. Service was excellent. Technicians were very courteous and professional and respectful of property. I would absolutely recommend this company.
Mark,Bryn., Leo were all extremely helpful and friendly. Everything fully explained. All work completed with 5star

I’ve used Midwest Comfort for years on my own home. Always professional and honest. Recently reached out to have my mother’s home maintained/serviced. Mark was excellent, on time and professional. Cleaned her furnace and diagnosed any issues as the system is nearing replacement. Mark was honest with her and went through options should she decide to replace the system. Could not be happier with the service. Will definitely be recommending Midwest Comfort to family and friends. One of the few remaining independent HVAC businesses you can trust.

Leo was very courteous and professional as always.
Sooooo.....we were just returning from an exhausting (but fun) vacation. The weatherman said the temperature would be in triple digits. I turned on the air conditioning. A couple hours later, our home was still hot and I realized the A/C wasn’t working. Panic! Quick! I called Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling and spoke with Brian. He set up an appointment for the same day. The same day! Mark came out and immediately found the problem. He was professional, knowledgeable and explained everything. Viola! He had our system was up and running in a very short time! I can’t say enough good things about Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling. I certainly give them the “mostest” number of stars. I don’t do a lot of reviews and/or “give stars,” but I certainly need to let people know how happy I am with this experience. I certainly will use them in the future for maintenance in our home and hopefully won’t need them a lot for emergencies like this but happy to know they’re there when needed! Thank you, thank you. I truly highly recommend Midwest Comfort Heating and Cooling!

There’s nothing like waking up in your house being at 80° and having to call a company we’ve never heard of. I called Midwest comfort heating and cooling in afternoon and they sent somebody out within the hour. They tried everything possible to replace a few parts and make it cost efficient to repair it but unfortunately, my unit was way past that they quoted me to replace both the furnace and AC to get a better deal and came back the next morning and had it done by 3 o’clock! Mark and Leo did a great job, super friendly and helpful! Brian in the office was a great help too! I would definitely recommend this company to anyone for a honest hardworking company you can trust especially nowadays!Thank you guys! 🙏
